The crucial question is that what it means for a hosting company to go green or to be considered as a green web host. Before answering this question you should understand the impact that the web hosting industry has on the environment.

Initially when you sign up with a hosting company your website will be placed on one of the hosting company’s servers. This purely depends on the size of the web hosting company they may have as many as 100 servers or more. There are many companies who currently manage thousands of servers. Now each server produces emissions much like a vehicle and these emissions can be particularly harmful to the environment.

In fact one of the conducted survey estimates the size of the hosting industry rapidly increasing and there are thousands of servers running 24/7 constantly that the hosting industry will become just as much of a polluter as the airline industry by the year 2015. Now it is critical that the hosting companies needs to take the proper steps to become as environmental friendly as possible. The question here is how do they do this?

The first place to start is right within their offices. They need to start employee recycling programs or implement internal processes that should be paperless and are a couple steps that many of the top green web hosts practice today. There are few green web hosting companies those have even gone as far as to have their employees to work from home or at local satellite offices to reduce the amount of emissions they produce commuting to work.

Another step that a web hosting companies can take is to plant a tree for every new customer signup or to only use eco friendly servers that use less power and still deliver superior results. Nowadays the biggest move that many of the top hosting companies making is to purchase wind energy credits. This means when hosting company purchases wind energy credits they essentially replace the power they pull from the grid with wind power. Many of the hosting companies who are green are practicing this nowadays.

As we all can see there are many ways by which a hosting company can go green. One benefit of hosting your website with a green web hosting company is that your website will stay green. This is the fact that you can advertise on your website as it will help you to demonstrate your visitors that you care and are conscious of the impact your website has on the environment.
