Tanning Beds and Pregnancy

By: Eric Minden

Every woman knows that having a nice golden tan makes you feel and look younger
and sexier. For women who have spent many hours a week and weeks out of the
month and months out of the year in a tanning bed, just to find out later that
they are pregnant can be devastating. These women have worked so hard to get the
tan the have desired and to keep that tan looking good takes so much work. So
the question at hand is, can pregnant women still tan in a tanning bed?

Any woman who has ever been in a tanning bed knows how hot the beds get, which
in turn will raise your body temperature while you are laying there trying to
get that golden tan. Many health professionals find this to be the biggest
concern for pregnant women who insist on tanning.

Health professionals will advise new moms to avoid any activities in which you
are at a higher risk of raising your body temperature. The activities in which
health professionals advise the mother to be to avoid include hot tubs,
long hot baths, steam rooms, saunas, and tanning beds.

The reason for the recommended avoidance is hypothermia which is a condition in
which the mother overheats. This condition has been known to cause spinal cord
malformations of the fetus. This condition is most likely to occur after the
mother to be has been at a temperature of 100 degrees for several hours.

There are no cases in which this condition has been caused by a tanning bed,
health professionals still advise you to stay out of the tanning bed, saying it
is better to be safe than sorry.

In some cases the mother to be will insist on tanning while she is pregnant, if
this is the case the mother should do so on their sides, this will help reduce
the risk of stopping the blood flow. Also, any person that decides to tan in
a tanning bed or outside, should wear the necessary eye protection and lotion
to protect against major burns in sensitive areas.

Since there are no studies in which the risks of tanning beds and pregnancy are
accurate, the mother to be should be knowledgeable of the potential risks for the
unborn child and herself.
