Teen and Dieting

By: Eric Minden

With the statistics of obesity rising, it is no wonder that our teens feel the
need to diet and exercise more. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be
healthy and in shape. However, there is a problem when it comes to teens finding
reasons to diet. The excuse is either "I am fat" or "I want to look like (insert
celebrity name here)".

Our teens don't see this as a problem, they see it as they are fitting in with
their friends or they are doing it for the best. In some cases, teens may need
to be on a diet, these are the teens that are overweight for their age and
height, not because they think they are fat or they want to look like the runway
models they see in magazines.

When teens become involved in sports and extracurricular activities they are
generally put on a diet by their coach or instructor, this is to help them with
their fitness level for that activity, not because they are fat or overweight.

Teens should not diet because they are still growing and until they hit adulthood
they will continue to grow. Furthermore, since they are growing they need all
the nutrition they can get, but they should not over do it. Meaning they do need
to watch what they are putting in their bodies but not to the extreme where they
refuse to eat. Dieting is dangerous for anyone who does it, more so for teens
and children.

If your teen must go on a diet to lose weight and only if it will be beneficial
to their health, they should be on an intake diet. In which they monitor what
they are eating throughout the day. Cutting back on junk food, sugars, caffeine,
and calories. When you take in more calories than you need each day, you need to
burn them off, and with the lazy society that we live in it will take an act
of congress to get some of our teens out and about and away from those video
games.

If your teen feels as though they need to go on a diet they should talk to their
physician about the reasons why they feel this way and what would be best for
them.
