For girls and young women, working as an au pair gives them a wonderful opportunity to learn about the culture and tradition of a foreign country and earn some money while studying. The money earned could help them monetary support for their studies. But, who is an au pair and what would be her duties? This article tries to give you some idea about them. The term au pair has been derived from the French word "au pair" meaning on a par or equal to. This meaning shows that they are to be treated as a member of the host family while staying with them and should not be treated like a domestic servant. Au pairs would share some of the responsibilities of baby and child care along with some light housework with other members of the host family. To be eligible for such an assignment of working as au pair, one should be female, unmarried and aged between 17 and 30. In the United States, this age limit is between 18 and 26. An au pair could stay in an alien country for the maximum period of two years as a member of a host family. They would help with house work of the host family for a fixed period each day with weekly offs, which is generally two days. They receive reasonable remuneration in return of their work and would stay in a separate room. They are not required to wear any uniform while they are working. They share food with the host family most of the time. They would also participate in all social activities of the host family like picnics and vacation trips. But, the host family would like to enjoy some private time especially in the evening. During this period, she may go off to her room to watch television or go out with friends. Other responsibilities could include taking children to and from school, babysitting, helping in cooking, cleaning, ironing etc. To work as an au pair, you would be required to approach an Au Pair Agency. These Au Pair Agencies keep both the records of the girls who want work as Au Pairs as well as of those families looking for an au pair. These agencies would require you to provide detailed information and references as well reports of different medical tests. They would provide you help in obtaining a visa. These agencies would also check the antecedents of the families who approach them to obtain the service of au pairs. Therefore, au pairs would be able to maintain their peace of mind while working. In most countries, it is not compulsory to approach an Au Pair Agency to get an opportunity to work as au pairs, it is compulsory in the United States to approach agencies that are approved by the government. But, it is advisable to approach an agency to obtain the work of an au pair because of its various advantages.
